Our Story
Back in 2019, when Khao Lak was better known for its beaches than for elephant welfare, a small group of us decided to do something different. We had seen too many elephants in chains — giving rides, performing tricks, carrying tourists up mountains day after day. These gentle giants deserved better. That’s how Khaolak Elephant Sanctuary was born.
Today, this sanctuary is home to six elephants, each with their own history, scars, and personality. Some once worked in logging camps, others spent years entertaining tourists. Here, they no longer perform. They simply live — eating, resting, and rediscovering what it means to be free.
Spend a morning here and you’ll see what we mean. One elephant might be busy stripping bark from a tree, another splashing happily in the mud. None of it is staged. They choose what to do, when to do it. Your role isn’t to control them, but to witness their world.
Our Mission
- To give rescued elephants a safe, dignified life.
- To educate travelers about ethical elephant tourism.
- To support local communities through sustainable travel.
A Glimpse of Their World

Care & Ethics in Practice
We operate on an observation-first model. That means: no riding, no shows, and — starting August 2025 — no feeding or bathing activities, to align with international welfare standards. Programs are small-group and paced to the elephants’ routines. Your guide will explain what you’re seeing and when we keep distance for their comfort.
